What did we do today? Hmmmmm…ohh yea I remember now! We went to see Alcatraz, the prison that is in SF Bay. First, we took the BART to Powell St, and walked down to Pier 33 to catch the ferry that would bring us to Alcatraz. The ferry left at 1:10 PM and I would say it was about 15 minutes ride to the island. The island was only 1 ¼ miles away, so it didn’t take long at all. Once we got there, we had to have the rules explained to us and such. Once the rules were explained, we went to watch a short film that talks about things that happened at Alcatraz. There was this one woman who grew up on the island and was telling about her story. She said that for school they would go to SF and by the time that they arrived back home the prisoners were always in their cell so they didn’t have to worry about anything. It was always quiet there and they weren’t much noise, besides the prisoners. After watching the short film, we went to look around at what they had on the island. They still had the warehouse/storehouse, the powerhouse, and the cell house. They had a sound tour that tells you about the cell house. We took the tour but Nutt interpreted for us. They showed us the different blocks that they had, they had block a, b, c, and d. Block D was for putting prisoners who were always breaking the rules and always getting in trouble. They had what was called the “hole”. It was a cell that had the metal door that is on all the cells, but then it had another door that would close after that. It would be pitch black, cold, windy, and lonely. They showed us the three cells of the prisoners who escaped. It showed the holes that they dug with spoons. They had gone through this hall that was behind the cells and the climbed the pipes that were there. They had to feel their way out because it was dark, after 10:30 PM. They were never heard of again. They had left dummies in their beds to fool the police officers. When it was time to count all the prisoners, three didn’t come to the doors. The officer went to one cell and banged on the bed to wake up the prisoner, and the dummy’s head fell off and gave the officer a fright. There was also this battle in Alcatraz where six prisoners were planning an escape. The plan was that Bernard Coy was to use a bar spacer thing that he made himself and slip through the bars to the gun gallery to get guns and the key that was supposed to open the door. Somehow the plan went all wrong and the key wouldn’t open the door so they captured eight guards and put them in two cells. One of the guards managed to write the six prisoners names on the wall and circled the ones that were the leaders of the whole thing. All but one got killed or executed. Two of the guards were killed. After seeing Alcatraz, we went to Pier 39 to eat dinner. At the restaurant, I had ordered a cheeseburger because it was mostly sea food and I don’t eat seafood. Megan had ordered an appetizer of popcorn shrimp and I asked if I could taste it and I liked it. When Megan couldn’t finish it she gave the rest to me. After eating, we went to the Ghirardelli Square. Ghirardelli Square is a small area that has the Ghirardelli chocolate store and ice cream. After everyone went to the bathroom, we all went to the ice cream store and got ice cream for desert. I had the “mint bliss”. It was one scoop of mint chocolate chip, one scoop of chocolate, hot fudge of dark chocolate, one piece of dark chocolate with mint filling, whip cream, and nuts. It was really good. When everyone was done, we went to look at Lombard St. You know the one that is curvy? Yeah that one. It was awesome. It was really steep, but gorgeous! It was a sight. I have never seen anything like it. There were bushes and flowers on the sides of the street and it was made of cobblestone or was it bricks? I can’t remember but it wasn’t the same as the other streets. We walked down the street and then when we got to the bottom we took pictures in front of the street for our memories!Once we started to walk back toward the street that had the cable cars, we were all excited to finally be able to ride the cable cars. We have been trying to get on a cable car for a while. When we got in line, Darren had to go to the restroom again so he went to the restroom while everyone else went to the line and waited. When the other car came, we were so close to getting on and we were starting to worry that we will have to miss the car because Darren hasn’t arrived back form the bathroom yet so. When he did arrive, Nancy was relieved that he did arrive before the other car arrived.Once we got on the car, Megan and I were on the same pole holding on and Nancy kept telling us to hold on with both hands. Megan and I kept teasing each other and stuff, like if we saw a Bug car we would punch each other. It was fun riding on the car with Megan, she always makes me laugh and have a good time. When we arrived at the BART, we were all exhausted and couldn’t wait to go back to CSD. We had to go to Bay Point then switch over to Fremont. Once we got to Fremont if was 11 PM and it was 11:30 by the time we arrived at the dorms. Everyone was so exhausted so we all went to bed. What a day! |
