Mike   Journal: Day Seven   other journals

Northern California BeachFalling asleep right away, I woke up about 7am but I was much panicked because we should be awake about 6am so we can leave here at 10am. But there was nothing here in the lobby and Anne just got ready. So I had typed Day six about yesterday because I have to add some more information.

Later on, we went to Monterey Aquarium and it was 2 hours drive but there was wonderful view of the big trees which smell like pine. The highway was very curvier than Connecticut! Then, we got there and we have the reserved parking which was really nice! We walked through the Monterey famous cannery industry and the boys had to investigate about that. It was very interesting because it happened in the 1920s with the sardines and the cannery factory collected the sardines. People from all over went there to work for 8 hours per day which was not easy. Later, in the 1960s, the cannery was broken down because of the sardines nearing extinction.

OtterWe entered the aquarium and it was very bigger than Boston and Mystic aquariums. We saw the cannery factory and it was unimaginable because it was running everyday during that time. I wish that factory can be running with the cannery models so we could watch the process. We saw sea otters which were very cute and funny and we were very fascinated with how sea otters can float while sleeping. We looked around at some other fishes and I was very fascinated at one fish that can use spit to hit its prey and the prey fell down to the water so the fish eat it.

We met the woman who works there and she told us that there were more river otters in other building. We felt like YEAH! So, we went to other building and we saw river otters which were smaller than sea otters. There was more information about the difference between sea and freshwater otters and the boys wrote the facts in the notebook so we can type later in the day. They were very cute when they were fighting each other! There were various types of otters of different sizes and habitats in different countries. I would really love to know more about the river otters!

After that, we walked to the bench with nice view of Pacific Ocean and we sat on the bench, eating our lunch. I ate turkey breast with mustard and some iced oatmeal cookies. Yum! The bird came to me when I am eating my lunch and I tried to give some food but the bird just fly away! It was not same behavior with New York City bird because the NYC birds were tougher than here!

Next, we went to the aquarium and our wise teachers told us that we can go ourselves to 3pm which had to meet them. Darren Tidepoolsand I walked through the entire aquarium and we saw a lot of strange marine animals such as light-flashing jellyfishes, schools of fishes, and dolphinfish. We saw the penguins and it made me to remember that when I am little and I are really loved the penguin in the Boston Aquarium. It was kind of cheap because the penguins have to stay in one area. In the Boston Aquarium, the penguins have more freedom such as rest and swimming. They were playing around and it made me happy!

Then, we met our teachers and we have to leave to go to see the Big Sur. We rode on the Route 1 which it was very famous route and seaside road. On the way to get there, we saw a lot of fantastic massive rocks and magnificent Pacific Ocean. We did stop a lot on the side of the road because we took some of marvelous pictures! One time that we stopped, it was very windy and our clothes were flapping wildly! WOW! It was very interesting because I saw a house that is top of the colossal hill and it made me to think how people felt when living there because of windy weather and very high height. When we arrived there, there were very immense hills and it was very fascinating to me because I imagined when I am camping there near the gorgeous ocean. I really wanted to know about its history but I have to wait because we rode on the van on way to the cottage. We will have very late dinner later on. I can’t wait for a big day in the jail island tomorrow! I am so excited!
