Going to get a little education today in Berkeley! Not only is Berkeley the site of the famous University of California campus, but it is also the original site of the California School for the Deaf. We contacted an employee at the campus in Fremont where we are staying and they informed us where the Berkeley campus was located. We found the campus with no problems. What a gorgeous view they had! As you stand on the front steps of the main building, now the Clark Kerr Campus of U.C. Berkeley, you can see the San Francisco Bay with the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance! It must have been difficult to leave such a beautiful place. The buildings have a lot of character with the terra cotta roofs. There is a very Mediterranean feel to the grounds as well as the architecture. We found the students working in the main reception area to be very cordial and helpful.
Stopping for lunch at a local gathering place for lunch, we were able to chat and exchange thoughts on what we had seen so far.
We walked around Berkeley soaking in the atmosphere! This is a very young and forward thinking crowd, diverse in culture. As we walked the streets, there were several street vendors plying their wares. As we passed one store, it had a window display teaching about the protests that led to 504, the legislation for Americans with Disabilities Act. The students were fascinated by the pictures of the protests that began in the streets of Berkeley in the 1960’s. The culture of the 1960’s was still prevalent in the area although the mixture of modern culture was forefront.
We had an enjoyable day in Berkeley. A very ‘eye opening’ experience! |
