Wow, I’ve been so anxious for this trip from the minute I was asked to join, that I can’t believe today is the day! Nancy, Anne, Angelina, Megan and I left ASD at 6:00am. Just let me tell you that ASD has AWESOME bus drivers. We hit a lot of traffic on our way to JFK. On the way, we made a stop to pick up Mike and Darren. Next, we were to meet Kangni at the train station, but we were running late due to an accident on Route 7. Kangni ended up meeting us at a rest stop. Once we picked her up, we really felt like we were off and running. We were, literally, running through JFK to catch our flight. Other than running to make sure we didn’t miss our flight, the check-in process went very smooth. Our flight, thankfully, was uneventful!
The students were excited as they took in the sights from 36,000 feet in the air and going at mach .8 (about 550 mph). We landed at San Francisco International Airport and commenced the trek to baggage claim. There was a bit of a wait for luggage but we were all happy that our luggage landed in the same place as we did. With Darren leading the way and navigating the airport signs, we found the way to rental cars via the tram system. Surprisingly, we signed all papers and received the keys to our huge silver van and were on the road to California School for the Deaf in Fremont, CA in only about 20 minutes. Thanks to Anne’s homework ahead of time, we found the school with no problem.
Once parked at CSD, the first thing the students noticed was the statue of the Indian with the bears, sculpted by Douglas Tilden, famous Deaf artist. Snap, snap, snap went the cameras! Dr. Klopping introduced himself and led us to the people in charge of the dormitories. Marcy was wonderful as she ‘checked us in’. The campus is confusing at first until you get your bearings. I’m sure after a couple of days; we will have no problem navigating our way. Rooms were chosen and we were all moved in! David was on hand to get us ‘technologically’ connected! Once all the laptops were up and running, David showed us where McDonald’s was so we could grab a quick dinner as it was very late! Back to CSD and the students wanted to log their first day. We all went to bed very late exhausted from all the excitement!
